Handling & Installation Guidelines for USA Tank Products

Important Notice:
USA Tanks are exceptionally durable; however, incorrect handling and installation procedures can cause damage to tanks, fittings, and accessories. Failure to follow these guidelines voids all warranties.

Receiving & Inspection:

  • Immediately inspect your tank upon delivery for defects or shipping damage.

  • Record any discrepancies or damages clearly on the driver’s bill of lading and your packing list.

Safe Unloading Practices:

  • Avoid contact with sharp objects or forklift blades when unloading tanks from delivery vehicles.

  • Never roll tanks onto their fittings or accessories.

  • Large bulk storage tanks should ideally be lifted using a crane or appropriate lifting equipment. Refer to OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910.178–1910.189) for proper lifting practices.

  • Ensure the unloading area is clear of rocks, debris, sharp objects, or materials that could damage the tank.

  • If unloading tanks on their side, use proper bracing to prevent rolling.

Tank Placement & Foundation:

  • Provide full, even, and firm support for the tank bottom.

  • A reinforced concrete pad is the optimal base.

  • For tanks with a base load under 800 lbs/sq. ft. (excluding seismic or wind considerations), a compacted bed of sand, pea gravel, or stable fine soil that resists erosion is acceptable.

  • Tanks with a base load of 800 lbs/sq. ft. or greater require a reinforced concrete foundation.

  • When using steel support stands, place them on a concrete base and securely bolt them down to prevent shifting due to wind, seismic forces, agitation, or accidental contact.

Tank Installation & Maintenance Considerations:

  • Position tanks in areas that are accessible, allowing for easy maintenance and future removal.

  • Before operational use, fill the tank with water and perform a leak test for at least 5 hours. This will verify that fittings are secure and confirm there is no shipping or manufacturing damage.

  • Plastic bulkhead fittings should only be hand-tightened. Over-tightening can damage fittings and cause leaks.

Supporting Rectangular Tanks:

  • Rectangular tanks taller than 18 inches generally require additional side support.

  • Special considerations apply if the tank is smaller yet contains liquids with high specific gravity or elevated temperatures; additional support may be needed.

  • Do not attach or mount heavy equipment onto tank sides.

Fittings, Pipes, and Accessories:

  • Never allow fittings or pipes to carry weight. Fully support all piping, valves, and accessories independently.

  • Incorporate expansion joints in the piping system to accommodate expansion and contraction, preventing damage at fittings.

Usage Limitations and Safety:

  • Tanks are designed exclusively for atmospheric chemical storage. Do not use tanks for vacuum or pressurized applications.

  • Ensure immersion heaters are installed at least 3-4 inches away from the tank walls to prevent damage.

  • Consult our chemical compatibility chart to confirm tank, fitting, and gasket compatibility with your chemicals and operating temperatures. If unsure, contact our technical support team.

  • Protect tanks from impacts, particularly in temperatures below 40°F.

Safety Warning - Confined Spaces:

  • Entering tanks is hazardous. Never enter tanks without first following appropriate confined-space safety procedures.

Tank Capacity & Measurement Disclaimer:

  • Tank dimensions listed are nominal. Molded tank calibrations provide approximate volume guidance only.

  • Polyethylene tanks expand and contract due to various factors including tank size, wall thickness, specific gravity of contents, and internal and ambient temperatures. Actual tank capacity may vary accordingly.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure the longevity, safety, and reliability of your USA Tank products.
